Points System

The New Zealand Skilled Migrant points system is designed to allow Expressions of Interest to be ranked in order so that the New Zealand Immigration authorities can make invitations to apply for residence to those migrants who can offer the most to New Zealand.

The points test and values are set out in more detail in our self-assessment points calculator, but in general, you can be allocated points for the following:
having an offer of skilled employment in New Zealand
bonus points for employment in areas of growth
bonus points for employment in an absolute skills shortage area
bonus points for employment within certain clusters
bonus points for employment outside of Auckland
work experience
qualifications
bonus points for New Zealand qualifications awarded after at least two years' study
age

What you must know before you apply for residence

Before you apply for residence in New Zealand, you will need to kns : To gain residence under the general skills or business investor categories, you have to score a certain number of points first. The self assessment guide tells you what the minimum points are and how you can score points.
The New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) can tell you the current pass mark, which is calculated every week. The pass mark is 23 available on the NZIS.

Partnership or Family Categories : The self assessment guide tells you what you need to do to gain residence under the partnership or family categories.

Information Sources : Good places to look for information about  New Zealand include :

  • Your library.
  • Local bookshops or video shops.
  • New Zealand news papers (Your library may have copies of these, or try a magazine/ news paper shop)
  • NZIS staff, who can give you help and advice.
  • New Zealand embassies and consulates, which are located world wide. Look under New- Zealand in your local telephone book, or ask for details at an information center.
